Founded by Arthur Ekrem in memory of his late father, Arthur Ekrem Sr., who was murdered by a gun, EGVCOA exists to confront rising murder rates with coordinated advocacy and measurable action.

Statistics on the dangers of gun use for self-defense
We understand why many people consider a firearm for protection. But research consistently shows that a gun kept in the home is more likely to be involved in an unintentional shooting, criminal assault, or suicide attempt than to be used to stop an intruder in self-defense.
One widely cited study found that for every time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were far more harmful outcomes—including unintentional shootings, criminal assaults/homicides, and attempted or completed suicides.
Research on “defensive gun use” surveys has also raised a serious concern: many self-reported defensive gun uses may have been illegal and against the interests of society, often occurring during escalating conflicts rather than clear-cut self-defense.
